Text: I was travelling in a bus. It was a bitterly cold night, and even at the far end of the bus the east wind cut like a knife.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: আমি একটি বাসে ভ্রমণ করছিলাম। এটি ছিল হাড়কাঁপানো ঠান্ডা রাত, এবং বাসের একদম শেষ প্রান্তে বসেও পুবের বাতাস ছুরির মতো কেটে বসছিল (অর্থাৎ খুব ঠান্ডা বাতাস বইছিল)।

Text: The bus stopped and two women and a man got in together and filled the vacant places. The younger woman carried a little Pekinese dog. The conductor came in and took their fares. Then his eye rested on the beady-eyed dog. I saw trouble coming.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: বাসটি থামল এবং দুজন মহিলা ও একজন পুরুষ একসঙ্গে উঠলেন এবং খালি জায়গাগুলো পূর্ণ করলেন। কমবয়েসী মহিলাটির সাথে একটি ছোট পিকিনিজ কুকুর (একধরণের ছোট লোমশ কুকুর) ছিল। কন্ডাক্টর ভেতরে এলেন এবং তাঁদের ভাড়া নিলেন। তারপর তাঁর চোখ গিয়ে পড়ল সেই পুঁতির মতো চোখওয়ালা কুকুরটির ওপর। আমি বুঝতে পারলাম ঝামেলা আসন্ন।

Text: This was the opportunity for which the conductor had been waiting, and he intended to make the most of it. I had marked him as the type who had a vague grievance against everything… “You must take that dog out,” he said.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: এটি ছিল সেই সুযোগ যার জন্য কন্ডাক্টর অপেক্ষা করছিলেন, এবং তিনি এটির পূর্ণ সদ্ব্যবহার করতে চাইলেন। আমি তাঁকে এমন ধরণের লোক হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করেছিলাম যার সবকিছুর প্রতিই একটা অস্পষ্ট ক্ষোভ বা অভিযোগ থাকে… তিনি বললেন, “আপনাকে ওই কুকুরটিকে নিয়ে বাইরে যেতে হবে।”

Text: “I shall certainly do nothing of the kind. You can keep my name and address,” said the woman.

Text: “You must take that dog out,” said the conductor. “I shall certainly do nothing of the kind. You can keep my name and address,” said the woman. She had evidently expected the challenge and knew the reply.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: কন্ডাক্টর বললেন, “আপনাকে ওই কুকুরটিকে বাইরে নিয়ে যেতে হবে।” মহিলাটি বললেন, “আমি অবশ্যই ওসব কিছুই করব না। আপনি আমার নাম ও ঠিকানা রাখতে পারেন।” তিনি স্পষ্টতই এই চ্যালেঞ্জটির (বাধা) জন্য প্রস্তুত ছিলেন এবং উত্তরটি তাঁর জানা ছিল।

Text: “You must take the dog out – that’s my order.” “I won’t go on the top of the bus in such weather. It would kill me,” said the woman.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: “আপনাকে কুকুরটিকে বের করতেই হবে – এটা আমার আদেশ।” মহিলাটি বললেন, “আমি এমন আবহাওয়ায় বাসের ছাদে যাব না। ওটা আমাকে মেরেই ফেলবে (শীতে জমে যাব)।”

Text: “Certainly not,” said her lady companion. “You’ve got a cough as it is.” “It’s nonsense,” said her male companion.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: তাঁর মহিলা সঙ্গীটি বললেন, “নিশ্চয়ই না। এমনিতেই তোমার কাশি হয়েছে।” তাঁর পুরুষ সঙ্গীটি বললেন, “এটা একটা বাজে ব্যাপার।”

Text: The conductor pulled the bell, and the bus stopped. “This bus doesn’t go on until that dog is brought out.” He stepped on to the pavement and waited. It was his moment of triumph. He had the law on his side.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: কন্ডাক্টর বেল বা ঘণ্টা বাজালেন, এবং বাসটি থেমে গেল। “এই বাস ততক্ষণ চলবে না যতক্ষণ না কুকুরটিকে বের করা হচ্ছে।” তিনি ফুটপাতে নেমে অপেক্ষা করতে লাগলেন। এটি ছিল তাঁর বিজয়ের মুহূর্ত। আইন তাঁর পক্ষে ছিল।

Text: Everybody in the bus was on the side of the lady and her dog. They talked in raised voices: “Shameful!” “Call the police!” “Let’s all report him!” “Let’s make him give us our fares back!”… The conductor was as cold as the night and as hard as the pavement.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: বাসের প্রত্যেকেই ওই ভদ্রমহিলা এবং তাঁর কুকুরের পক্ষে ছিলেন। তাঁরা উচ্চস্বরে কথা বলছিলেন: “লজ্জাজনক!” “পুলিশ ডাকো!” “চলো আমরা সবাই মিলে ওর নামে রিপোর্ট করি!” “ওকে বাধ্য করো আমাদের ভাড়া ফেরত দিতে!”… কন্ডাক্টর ছিলেন সেই রাতের মতোই শীতল এবং ফুটপাতের মতোই কঠোর (অনড়)।

Text: The poor woman had evidently had a hard life… She finally went up the stairs. The bus started. It stopped. The engine had gone wrong. The conductor went to the help of the driver. It was a long job. Meanwhile, the lady descended the stairs and re-entered the bus. The engine was put right, the conductor came back and pulled the bell. Then his eye fell on the dog, and his hand went to the bell-rope again.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: বেচারি মহিলাটির জীবন সম্ভবত খুবই কষ্টের ছিল… তিনি শেষমেশ সিঁড়ি দিয়ে (বাসের ছাদে) উঠে গেলেন। বাসটি চলতে শুরু করল। আবার থামল। ইঞ্জিনে গোলমাল দেখা দিল। কন্ডাক্টর ড্রাইভারকে সাহায্য করতে গেলেন। এটি ছিল দীর্ঘ সময়ের কাজ। ইতিমধ্যে, ওই মহিলা সিঁড়ি দিয়ে নেমে এলেন এবং পুনরায় বাসের ভেতর ঢুকলেন। ইঞ্জিন ঠিক হলো, কন্ডাক্টর ফিরে এলেন এবং বেল বাজালেন। তারপর তাঁর চোখ পড়ল কুকুরটির ওপর, এবং তাঁর হাত আবার বেলের দড়ির দিকে গেল (বাস থামানোর জন্য)।

Text: The struggle began all over again. The conductor walked on the pavement, the little dog blinked at the lights… Finally she went to the top. The bus was soon empty, and I was the last passenger left behind. “I’ve got my rules,” the conductor said to me…
বঙ্গানুবাদ: সংগ্রামটি আবার নতুন করে শুরু হলো। কন্ডাক্টর ফুটপাতে পায়চারি করতে লাগলেন, ছোট কুকুরটি আলোর দিকে তাকিয়ে মিটমিট করতে লাগল… অবশেষে তিনি (মহিলাটি) ছাদে গেলেন। শীঘ্রই বাসটি খালি হয়ে গেল, এবং আমিই ছিলাম শেষ যাত্রী। কন্ডাক্টর আমাকে বললেন, “আমার নিয়ম আছে…”

Text: I said, “Some are hard and fast rules, like the rule of the road, which cannot be broken without danger to life and limb. But some are only rules for your guidance, like that rule about the dogs… They are meant to be observed in the spirit, not in the letter, for the comfort of the passengers. You have kept the rule and broken its spirit.”
বঙ্গানুবাদ: আমি বললাম, “কিছু নিয়ম খুব কঠোর বা ধরাবাঁধা (hard and fast), যেমন রাস্তার নিয়ম, যা জীবন ও অঙ্গহানির ঝুঁকি ছাড়া ভাঙা যায় না। কিন্তু কিছু নিয়ম কেবল আপনার নির্দেশনার জন্য, যেমন ওই কুকুরের নিয়মটি… যাত্রীদের আরামের জন্য সেগুলোকে আক্ষরিক অর্থে (letter) না মেনে, সেগুলোর মূল উদ্দেশ্য বা মেজাজ (spirit) দিয়ে পালন করা উচিত। আপনি নিয়মটি রক্ষা করেছেন কিন্তু এর মূল উদ্দেশ্যটিই ভেঙে ফেলেছেন।”
