His First Flight
(Part 1: Fear and Isolation)

(Text & Translation)

Text: The young seagull was alone on his ledge. His two brothers and his sister had already flown away the day before. He had been afraid to fly with them. When he had run forward to the brink of the ledge he became afraid.

Text: The great expanse of the sea stretched down beneath, and it was miles down. He felt certain that his wings would never support him; so he bent his head and ran away back to the little hole where he slept at night.

Text: His father and mother had come around calling to him shrilly, scolding him, threatening to let him starve on his ledge unless he flew away. But for the life of him he could not move. That was twenty-four hours ago.

Text: Since then nobody had come near him. The day before, he had watched his parents flying about with his brothers and sister, perfecting them in the art of flight, teaching them how to skim the waves and how to dive for fish.

(Click to Reveal Answer)

The Importance of Vultures

Vultures are large birds of prey that play a vital role in keeping our environment clean. They feed on dead animals and prevent the spread of diseases. They have a strong stomach acid that kills harmful bacteria. However, vulture populations are declining rapidly due to the use of a veterinary drug called diclofenac. This decline poses a serious threat to the ecosystem. Conservation efforts are needed to save these useful birds from extinction.

(Note: This is a sample summary based on typical passages about vultures found in textbooks. The exact summary may vary slightly depending on the specific text in your edition.)
