Text: I was on my way from Faizabad to Lucknow. I sat down on a bench on the platform and started watching the monkeys frolicking on the trees and on the open platform. The monkeys descended now and then to collect half-sucked mango stones and the remainders of food from the platform. The younger monkeys sat on the boughs of neem and tamarind trees, ready to jump after any loose food or clothes.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: আমি ফৈজাবাদ থেকে লখনৌ যাচ্ছিলাম। আমি প্ল্যাটফর্মের একটি বেঞ্চে বসলাম এবং গাছপালা ও খোলা প্ল্যাটফর্মে বানরদের খেলাধুলা দেখতে লাগলাম। বানররা মাঝে মাঝে প্ল্যাটফর্ম থেকে আধা-চোষা আমের আঁটি এবং খাবারের অবশিষ্টাংশ সংগ্রহ করতে নিচে নেমে আসছিল। ছোট বানররা নিম এবং তেঁতুল গাছের ডালে বসে থাকত, যেকোনো আলগা খাবার বা কাপড়ের ওপর ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ার জন্য প্রস্তুত হয়ে।

Text: Just then the train was announced by the ringing of the station bell. I concentrated on securing a seat for myself in the train. I got a window seat overlooking the platform. Some other passengers joined me in the compartment. We were all sweating from the rising heat of the summer.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: ঠিক তখনই স্টেশনের ঘণ্টা বেজে ট্রেনের আগমন ঘোষণা করা হলো। আমি ট্রেনে নিজের জন্য একটি আসন নিশ্চিত করতে মনোনিবেশ করলাম। আমি প্ল্যাটফর্মের দিকে মুখ করা একটি জানলার ধারের সিট পেলাম। আরও কিছু যাত্রী আমার কামরায় যোগ দিলেন। গ্রীষ্মের বাড়তে থাকা গরমে আমরা সবাই ঘামছিলাম।

Text: Several passengers were busy filling up their small earthen pitchers from a water pump. I was struck by the genius of a monkey in snatching away the loin cloth of a pious person who was taking a bath under the pump. A great deal of general amusement was caused by this incident.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: বেশ কয়েকজন যাত্রী জলের পাম্প থেকে তাদের ছোট মাটির কলসি ভরতে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন। পাম্পের নিচে স্নানরত এক ধার্মিক ব্যক্তির কোমরের কাপড় (লংগোট) ছিনিয়ে নেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে একটি বানরের বুদ্ধিমত্তা দেখে আমি অবাক হয়ে গেলাম। এই ঘটনায় সবাই বেশ মজা পেল।

Text: Just then a gentleman came up to our compartment. He looked like a businessman. He was dressed in a white muslin dhoti, a delicate tunic and an embroidered cap on his head. A porter was carrying his luggage. Suddenly a monkey leapt down from the top of our compartment and snatched away the fine embroidered cap of the businessman. The monkey then climbed up the neem tree.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: ঠিক তখনই একজন ভদ্রলোক আমাদের কামরার সামনে এলেন। তাঁকে দেখে ব্যবসায়ী মনে হচ্ছিল। তিনি একটি সাদা মসলিন ধুতি, একটি মিহি বা সূক্ষ্ম ফতুয়া (টিউনিক) এবং মাথায় একটি নকশা করা টুপি পরেছিলেন। একজন কুলি তাঁর মালপত্র বহন করছিল। হঠাৎ আমাদের কামরার ছাদ থেকে একটি বানর নিচে লাফিয়ে পড়ল এবং ব্যবসায়ীর সেই সুন্দর নকশা করা টুপিটি ছিনিয়ে নিল। তারপর বানরটি নিম গাছে উঠে গেল।

Text: The businessman threw a stone at the monkey. The monkey looked at him and grimaced. “Don’t do that,” shouted a voice from the crowd. “He will tear your cap.” Now the businessman was confused. His round and smug face was covered with perspiration. He ran towards the tree over the pump and stood threatening the monkey.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: ব্যবসায়ীটি বানরটির দিকে একটি পাথর ছুঁড়লেন। বানরটি তাঁর দিকে তাকাল এবং দাঁত খিঁচালো (ভেংচি কাটল)। “ওটা করবেন না,” ভিড়ের মধ্য থেকে একটি কণ্ঠস্বর চিৎকার করে বলল। “সে আপনার টুপিটা ছিঁড়ে ফেলবে।” এখন ব্যবসায়ী বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে পড়লেন। তাঁর গোলগাল এবং আত্মতুষ্ট মুখটি ঘামে ভিজে গিয়েছিল। তিনি পাম্পের ওপরের গাছটির দিকে দৌড়ে গেলেন এবং বানরটিকে ভয় দেখাতে দাঁড়িয়ে রইলেন।

Text: Just then, a fruit vendor appeared, pushing his little cart. He told the Sethji not to worry. He would get the cap back. The vendor went near the tree. He lifted a couple of bananas in his right hand and stretched it out to the monkey. “Aou! Aou!” he called to the monkey.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: ঠিক তখনই, একজন ফলওয়ালা তার ছোট ঠেলাগাড়ি ঠেলে সেখানে উপস্থিত হলো। সে শেঠজিকে চিন্তা না করতে বলল। সে টুপিটি ফিরিয়ে আনবে। ফলওয়ালা গাছটির কাছে গেল। সে তার ডান হাতে দুটো কলা তুলে নিল এবং বানরটির দিকে বাড়িয়ে দিল। “আও! আও!” বলে সে বানরটিকে ডাকল।

Text: The monkey hesitated. “Aou! Aou!” the vendor cooed in a soft voice. The monkey looked around in fear. It seemed slightly attracted by the bananas. The vendor took a step forward. He stretched out his hand with the bananas. The monkey climbed down a few branches.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: বানরটি ইতস্তত করল। “আও! আও!” ফলওয়ালা মৃদু স্বরে ডাকল। বানরটি ভয়ে ভয়ে চারপাশে তাকাল। মনে হলো সে কলার প্রতি কিছুটা আকৃষ্ট হয়েছে। ফলওয়ালা এক পা এগিয়ে গেল। সে কলাসহ হাতটি বাড়িয়ে দিল। বানরটি কয়েকটা ডাল নিচে নেমে এল।

Text: The vendor cooed again. The monkey accepted the bargain. It took over the bananas with its right hand and released the embroidered cap, slightly crumpled, with its left hand. The spectators shouted in praise. “Wa! Wa!” The vendor came and offered the cap to the businessman.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: ফলওয়ালা আবার মৃদু স্বরে ডাকল। বানরটি এই চুক্তিতে রাজি হলো (বিনিময় মেনে নিল)। সে তার ডান হাত দিয়ে কলাগুলো নিল এবং তার বাম হাত দিয়ে সেই নকশা করা টুপিটি, যা কিছুটা দুমড়ে-মুচড়ে গিয়েছিল, ছেড়ে দিল। দর্শকরা প্রশংসায় চিৎকার করে উঠল। “বাঃ! বাঃ!” ফলওয়ালা এসে ব্যবসায়ীকে টুপিটি দিয়ে দিল।

Text: “They are hungry,” he said, “so they disturb the passengers.” “Acha,” said the Sethji, and turned to go into the compartment. The vendor said, “Sethji, please give me two annas for the bananas which I had to offer to the monkey.” “Two annas! What impudence!” shouted the Sethji… “Give him an anna,” the Sethji said to the porter… The porter went out. The vendor looked in through the compartment window. “Sethji, do not rob the poor!”
বঙ্গানুবাদ: “ওরা ক্ষুধার্ত,” সে (ফলওয়ালা) বলল, “তাই ওরা যাত্রীদের বিরক্ত করে।” “আচ্ছা,” শেঠজি বললেন এবং কামরার ভেতরে যাওয়ার জন্য ঘুরলেন। ফলওয়ালা বলল, “শেঠজি, দয়া করে আমাকে দুই আনা পয়সা দিন সেই কলাগুলোর জন্য যা আমাকে বানরটিকে দিতে হয়েছিল।” “দুই আনা! কী স্পর্ধা!” শেঠজি চিৎকার করে উঠলেন… “ওকে এক আনা দাও,” শেঠজি কুলিটিকে বললেন… কুলিটি চলে গেল। ফলওয়ালা কামরার জানালা দিয়ে ভেতরে তাকাল। “শেঠজি, গরিবকে ঠকাবেন না!”

Text: “Ja, ja! Take rest,” the Sethji scowled at him. The train had begun to move. The fruit vendor first ran along with the train, then got on to the footstep and clung to the window, pleading. But Sethji had turned his head away. He was looking out of the window at the goods train on the other side. The train picked up speed. The vendor fell back.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: “যা, যা! বিশ্রাম নে (ভাগ এখান থেকে),” শেঠজি তাকে ধমক দিলেন। ট্রেন চলতে শুরু করেছিল। ফলওয়ালা প্রথমে ট্রেনের সাথে সাথে দৌড়াল, তারপর পাদানিতে উঠল এবং জানলা আঁকড়ে ধরে কাকুতি-মিনতি করতে লাগল। কিন্তু শেঠজি তাঁর মুখ অন্যদিকে ঘুরিয়ে নিলেন। তিনি জানলা দিয়ে উল্টো দিকের মালগাড়ির দিকে তাকিয়ে রইলেন। ট্রেন গতি বাড়াল। ফলওয়ালা পিছিয়ে পড়ল।

Text: The whole compartment was laughing with a dry cough at the businessman. “He climbed the neem tree to save the cap,” observed one passenger. “What is two annas for him?” said another. Sethji looked round at all of us and began to justify himself. “If he did not want to help me to get my cap back, he should not have offered the monkey the bananas. I did not ask him to help.”
বঙ্গানুবাদ: পুরো কামরার লোকজন শুষ্ক কাশির মতো করে ব্যবসায়ীকে নিয়ে হাসাহাসি করছিল। “সে টুপিটা বাঁচাতে নিম গাছে উঠেছিল (পরিশ্রম করেছিল),” একজন যাত্রী মন্তব্য করলেন। “দুই আনা তাঁর কাছে আর কী এমন ব্যাপার?” অন্য একজন বললেন। শেঠজি আমাদের সবার দিকে তাকালেন এবং নিজেকে নির্দোষ প্রমাণ করার চেষ্টা করলেন। “সে যদি আমার টুপি ফেরত পেতে সাহায্য করতে না চাইত, তবে বানরটাকে কলা দেওয়া তার উচিত হয়নি। আমি তো তাকে সাহায্য করতে বলিনি।”

Text: I felt that all the other passengers had sympathy for the poor vendor. The whole amusing episode had ended in a bitter sense of grievance against the rich businessman… I drew a caricature of Sethji and showed my drawing to all the other passengers except him. Everyone laughed. The more we laughed, Sethji became the more uncomfortable.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: আমি অনুভব করলাম যে অন্য সব যাত্রীর ওই গরিব ফলওয়ালার প্রতি সহানুভূতি ছিল। পুরো মজাদার ঘটনাটি ধনী ব্যবসায়ীর প্রতি এক তিক্ত ক্ষোভের মধ্য দিয়ে শেষ হলো… আমি শেঠজির একটি ব্যঙ্গচিত্র (কার্টুন) আঁকলাম এবং তিনি ছাড়া অন্য সব যাত্রীকে দেখালাম। সবাই হাসল। আমরা যত হাসছিলাম, শেঠজি ততই অস্বস্তিবোধ করছিলেন।
