মর্টিমার সেই জরাজীর্ণ পুরনো বইটির প্রতি মুগ্ধ হয়ে পড়েছিল। বইটিতে ‘মিডনাইট এক্সপ্রেস’ (Midnight Express) নামে একটি গল্প ছিল। পঞ্চাশ নম্বর পৃষ্ঠায় একটি ছবি ছিল, যা তাকে কোনো এক অজানা কারণে ভীত করত। ছবিটিতে রাতের বেলা একটি নিষ্প্রভ, হলুদ বাতির আলোয় আলোকিত একটি জনশূন্য রেলওয়ে প্ল্যাটফর্ম দেখানো হয়েছিল। বাতিটির নিচে একজন লোক দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল, তার মুখটি একটি সুড়ঙ্গের কালো গহ্বরের দিকে ফেরানো ছিল। মর্টিমার কখনো পঞ্চাশ নম্বর পৃষ্ঠার পরে পড়েনি।
তারপর বহু বছর কেটে গেল। মর্টিমার এখন যুবক। একদিন, মাঝরাতে, সে একটি অন্ধকার, জনশূন্য জংশনে ট্রেনের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিল।

সেখানে একটি মাত্র নিষ্প্রভ বাতি জ্বলছিল। বাতির আলোয়, মর্টিমার হঠাৎ একটি অন্ধকার এবং নিঃসঙ্গ অবয়ব লক্ষ্য করল যা তার চেনা। এটি তার ছেলেবেলায় তার বইয়ের পঞ্চাশ পাতায় দেখা গিয়েছিল। অবয়বটি একটি সুড়ঙ্গের কালো গহ্বরের দিকে মুখ করে ছিল।

এক চতুর্থাংশ মাইল দূরে, মর্টিমার একটি ছোট সাদা কুঁড়েঘর দেখতে পেল। মরিয়া হয়ে আশ্রয় খুঁজতে গিয়ে, মর্টিমার কাঠের দরজায় জোরে ধাক্কা দিল। সে ক্যাঁচক্যাঁচে সিঁড়ি দিয়ে ভারী পায়ের শব্দ নেমে আসতে শুনল। দরজা খুলল এবং একটি ছায়ামূর্তি মোমবাতি হাতে দাঁড়িয়ে রইল। তারা কোনো কথা বলল না। ছায়ামূর্তিটি তাকে ভেতরে ইশারা করল। তারা ক্যাঁচক্যাঁচে সিঁড়ি দিয়ে ওপরে উঠল।

ছায়ামূর্তিটি তাকে ওপরের একটি ঘরে নিয়ে গেল যেখানে উজ্জ্বল আগুন জ্বলছিল। আগুনের পাশে একটি আরামকেদারা (armchair) ছিল। আরামকেদারার পাশে একটি ছোট ওক কাঠের টেবিল ছিল যার ওপর লাল চামড়ায় বাঁধানো একটি জরাজীর্ণ পুরনো বই খোলা অবস্থায় রাখা ছিল। ছায়ামূর্তিটি টেবিলের ওপর মোমবাতি রাখল এবং নিঃশব্দে চলে গেল।
মর্টিমার ধপ করে আরামকেদারায় বসে পড়ল এবং পুরনো বইটি তুলে নিল। এক প্রকার ধাক্কা খেয়ে সে বুঝতে পারল এটি তার ছেলেবেলার সেই একই বই যাতে ‘মিডনাইট এক্সপ্রেস’ গল্পটি ছিল। মর্টিমার অত্যন্ত ভয়ের সাথে পাতা উল্টাতে লাগল। সে পড়তে শুরু করল। গল্পটি এমন এক ব্যক্তিকে নিয়ে ছিল যে তার ছোটবেলায় একটি বই পড়েছিল যাতে একটি ভীতিকর ছবি ছিল।
মর্টিমার ঘটনার এই অদ্ভুত চক্রটি বোঝার চেষ্টা করল যার মধ্য দিয়ে সে যাচ্ছিল। সে তীব্র আতঙ্কে পরিপূর্ণ হয়ে গেল। “কে এই অদ্ভুত মানুষ যে আমাকে এই কুঁড়েঘরে নিয়ে এল?” মর্টিমার ভয়ে ভয়ে নিজেকে প্রশ্ন করল।
ঠিক সেই মুহূর্তে দরজা খুলল এবং সেই অদ্ভুত গৃহকর্তা ভেতরে এল। তার মুখ অন্ধকারে ঢাকা ছিল। টেবিলের ওপর রাখা মোমবাতিটি দেওয়ালে বিশাল ছায়া ফেলছিল। ছায়ামূর্তিটি মর্টিমারের সামনে এসে দাঁড়াল। ধীরে ধীরে সে সামনের দিকে ঝুঁকল। মর্টিমার, আরামকেদারায় বসে, তার মেরুদণ্ড দিয়ে এক হিমশীতল স্রোত বয়ে যেতে অনুভব করল। সে ছায়ামূর্তিটির মুখের দিকে তাকাল। মর্টিমার বুঝতে পারল সে নিজের দিকেই তাকিয়ে আছে। নিচের হলঘরে ঘড়ির কাঁটা টিকটিক করছিল এবং বাইরে সমুদ্র গর্জন করছিল। মোমবাতির আলো কাঁপছিল। লাল চামড়ায় বাঁধানো সেই পুরনো, জরাজীর্ণ বইটি টেবিলের ওপর খোলা পড়ে রইল।
