প্রায় চল্লিশ বছর আগে আমি পর্যটকদের কাছে সম্পূর্ণ অজানা পাহাড়ের মধ্য দিয়ে এক দীর্ঘ পদব্রজে ভ্রমণে গিয়েছিলাম, সেই খুব পুরনো অঞ্চলে যেখানে আল্পস পর্বতমালা প্রোভেন্সের (Provence) মধ্যে প্রবেশ করেছে। এটি ছিল অনুর্বর এবং একঘেয়ে ভূমি। সেখানে বুনো ল্যাভেন্ডার ছাড়া আর কিছুই জন্মাত না।
আমি এই দেশটির সবচেয়ে প্রশস্ত অংশটি পার হচ্ছিলাম, এবং তিন দিন হাঁটার পর, আমি নিজেকে সম্পূর্ণ জনশূন্যতার মধ্যে খুঁজে পেলাম। আমি একটি পরিত্যক্ত গ্রামের পাশে তাঁবু খাটালাম। আগের দিনই আমার শেষ জলটুকু ব্যবহার করে ফেলেছিলাম এবং আমাকে আরও জল খুঁজতে হতো। গ্রামের এই ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত বাড়িগুলো আমাকে ভাবতে বাধ্য করল যে, এক সময় সেখানে অবশ্যই একটি ঝর্ণা বা কূপ ছিল। সেখানে সত্যিই একটি ঝর্ণা ছিল, কিন্তু সেটি শুকনো ছিল। সমস্ত প্রাণ অদৃশ্য হয়ে গিয়েছিল।
এটি ছিল জুনের একটি সুন্দর দিন এবং প্রচুর রোদ ছিল, কিন্তু এই আশ্রয়হীন ভূমিগুলোতে, আকাশের অনেক উঁচুতে, বাতাস অবিরাম শিস দিচ্ছিল। এর শব্দ ছিল অনেকটা খাবারের সময় বিরক্ত করা কোনো বুনো জন্তুর মতো।
আমাকে আমার তাঁবু সরাতে হলো। পাঁচ ঘণ্টা হাঁটার পরেও, আমি জল পেলাম না, এবং কোনো কিছু পাওয়ার আশাও আমাকে দিচ্ছিল না।

সর্বত্র একই শুষ্কতা, একই শক্ত, কাষ্ঠল গাছপালা ছিল। আমার মনে হলো আমি দূরে একটি অবয়বের ছায়া দেখতে পেলাম। ভাগ্যের ওপর ভরসা করে আমি সেদিকে এগিয়ে গেলাম। তিনি ছিলেন একজন মেষপালক। প্রায় ত্রিশটি মেষশাবক তার কাছে তপ্ত মাটিতে বিশ্রাম নিচ্ছিল।
তিনি আমাকে পান করার জন্য জল দিলেন এবং কিছুক্ষণ পরে তিনি আমাকে তার মেষপালকের কুঁড়েঘরে নিয়ে গেলেন। তিনি আমার সাথে তার স্যুপ ভাগ করে খেলেন। এটা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ঠিক হয়ে গেল যে আমি রাতটা সেখানেই কাটাব, কারণ সবচেয়ে কাছের গ্রামটি তখনও দেড় দিনের বেশি হাঁটাপথ দূরে ছিল। এই এলাকায় পাহাড়ের ঢালে একে অপরের থেকে দূরে ছড়িয়ে ছিটিয়ে থাকা চার বা পাঁচটি গ্রাম আছে। সেখানে কাঠুরেরা বাস করে যারা কাঠকয়লা তৈরি করে।
মেষপালক একটি থলি বের করলেন এবং টেবিলের ওপর এক গাদা ওক গাছের ফল (acorns) ঢাললেন। তিনি খুব মনোযোগ দিয়ে একটার পর একটা ফল পরীক্ষা করতে লাগলেন, ভালো ফলগুলোকে খারাপগুলো থেকে আলাদা করতে লাগলেন।
যখন তার সামনে একশোটি নিখুঁত ওক ফল জমা হলো তখন তিনি থামলেন, এবং আমরা ঘুমাতে গেলাম। এই মানুষটির সঙ্গ আমাকে এক শান্তির অনুভূতি এনে দিল। তিনি আমাকে এমন ধারণা দিলেন যে কোনো কিছুই তাকে বিচলিত করতে পারে না। আমি কৌতূহলী হলাম এবং আমি এই মানুষটি সম্পর্কে আরও জানতে চাইলাম।

পরের দিন বাইরে যাওয়ার আগে, তিনি এক বালতি জলে সেই ওক ফলগুলো (acorns) ভিজিয়ে নিলেন যেগুলো তিনি খুব যত্ন সহকারে বেছেছিলেন এবং গুনেছিলেন। হাঁটার লাঠি হিসেবে তিনি একটি লোহার রডও সঙ্গে নিলেন। তিনি আমাকে তার সাথে যাওয়ার আমন্ত্রণ জানালেন।

জমিটির কোনো পরিবর্তন হয়নি। আগের দিন থেকেই আমি সেই মেষপালকের কথা ভাবছিলাম যিনি গাছ লাগিয়েছিলেন। আমি নিজেকে বললাম, “দশ হাজার ওক গাছ নিশ্চয়ই অনেকটা জায়গা দখল করে আছে।”
